Based preconfirmations

I think this discussion highlights the blurred lines that define what it means to be based. From Justin’s og post on based rollups, the “sequencing is driven by the base L1”. Both proposals discussed by Justin and Ben aren’t technically being driven by the base L1 anymore, but rather by some form of off-chain consensus, albeit with the L2 proposers explicitly now some subset of the L1 proposers in Justin’s proposal.

This sounds like removing the basedness of the rollup. Based sequencing using the standard non-preconf entry point becomes an elaborate forced inclusion list, which will have no guarantee of execution as preconfs can always front-run the non-preconfs. Sequencing is effectively moved off-chain using both this protocol and the Espresso suggestion, which is a contradiction to based sequencing imo.
Maybe it’s not? Interested to hear your thoughts.
